The Book of Beginnings: Life at a Glance

So, I got to be honest with you guys, I hadn’t really thought about it until now how daunting Genesis Chapter one really is! There are so many things just in the first chapter as far as basic bible study. Not to mention everything else that I want to discuss, like creation vs big bang, proof of God/ Intelligent Design, 24 hour days vs Millions of years, the list really goes on. There is so much debate about the first chapter of the Bible that it’s kind of overwhelming, which is why I haven’t made this post as quickly as I have wanted to. Just so y’all know I am more than likely going to address these issues just maybe not all in one post because this might start looking like a 40-page thesis paper rather than an enjoyable blog post you can read with your morning coffee.

So let us begin…

The first chapter of the Bible is arguably, one of the most important. It is the foundation on which we set all of our faith. That God created the heavens and the earth. There are a lot of things that can be debated among Christians, but this is not one. The Lord was not vague when He described the earth’s creation. And as I read that first sentence, I am always blown away by the majesty of it. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Have you ever stopped and thought about the fact that God created the heavens and the earth, for us? That the Lord had us in mind for those seven days that he crafted our earthly home, made exactly for us. Made with his beautiful and unending love.

If you can truly believe in the first verse of the Bible, then everything else should really be no problem. You believe in miracles, in the miraculous workings of the Lord. So why would you have any trouble believing that He can walk on the waters the He created? If you believe that your Heavenly Father gave this earth, and you life, then it shouldn’t be hard to believe that he can heal the sick and raise the dead. If you believe that He formed the heavens and the earth, then it shouldn’t be difficult to believe that He can move through this world as its creator.

Sweet Friends, here’s the honest truth, we all have doubts sometimes. Especially when it comes to the supernatural characteristics and actions of God. But I challenge you that when you begin to have these doubts to look back to Genesis 1:1. To read it and reaffirm the foundation of your beliefs, because if you believe that He created everything, that He created you, then everything else isn’t so hard to believe.

Do you guys ever find it interesting that the Bible go to lengths to prove a lot of things, to explain a lot of things, but it never really does this with the Lord. The Bible doesn’t try to prove the existence of God. In fact, the Bible assumes that we know God is real, it doesn’t feel the need to preface Genesis with any proof of God instead it begins with the assumption that we know. Now I think that this is for two main reasons. Because God is in fact real. And two, because there is evidence of design everywhere. Everywhere you look you can see God’s hands, from the smallest grains of sand to Everest. In all of it we can see God’s artistry.

There is a quote by George Wald a biochemist and Harvard alumni that says…

“One has only to contemplate the magnitude of this task to concede that the spontaneous generation of an organism is impossible, yet we are here as a result of spontaneous generation. When it comes to the origin of life. There are only two possibilities, creation or spontaneous generation, there is no third way. Spontaneous generation was disproved 100 years ago, but that leads us only one other conclusion that of supernatural creation. We can not accept that on philosophical grounds, therefore we choose to believe the impossible. That life arose by chance.”

Basically, what Wald is saying is that the idea that life arose spontaneously has been proven to not be possible. And that we can see strong evidence of intelligent design, of creation. So, because it has to be one of the two, and one of them is impossible. That means it’s actually a greater leap of faith to believe that God does not exist than believe that He does.  Really let that sink in today friends, because it’s quite amazing!

William Paley put the argument of Intelligent Design like this.

“The watch must have had a maker. There must have existed at some time at some place one who formed it for the purpose which we find it actually to answer, who comprehended its construction and designed its use.”

For one of my favorite examples, look at Mount Rushmore…

Now I don’t think that anyone would believe me if I tried to tell you that the faces carved into the mountain happened by chance. That a great storm happened or a rock slide and suddenly 4 U.S. Presidents faces appeared. The design is evident. The detail too complex to have happened on its own. But in the same breath people can proclaim that the mountain they are carved on, that the people of which the likeness is taken, that the millions of cells arranged in perfect order to support life was spontaneous, that it happened by chance. Not once but millions upon millions of times. To me it seems that that takes more faith to believe than believing that there is a God.

Even Charles Darwin once said this.

“Reason tells me of the extreme difficulty or rather impossibility of conceiving this immense and wonderful universe, including man with his capability of looking far backwards and far into the future, as the result of blind chance or necessity…When this reflecting I feel compelled to look to a first cause having an intelligent mind in some degree analogous to that of man; and I deserve to be called a theist.” (cited from Anthony Flew in ‘There is a God. How the worlds most notorious Atheist changed his mind.’)

So friends, the existence of the universe in of itself is proof of God. because there are only three options. That the universe has always existed. That the Universe created itself, or that the universe was created.

The first option is not accepted by Christians or scientists. All scientific evidence points to the idea that the universe came to be at some point.

“Almost everyone believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning.” – Steven Hawking

Christians and non- creationist scientists just disagree on how, but even many who don’t believe in God seem to struggle with discounting Him altogether as you can see from the quotes above from some of the most famous atheist scientists.

Having studied these things for most of my life, going all the way back to elementary school well before I was a believer, I can say that I don’t have enough faith to be an atheist. When I look around this wonderful world that is far beyond my comprehension it continues to reaffirm my faith that God is real. That God created the universe. And He explains how He did it in Genesis Chapter One. And it brings tears to my eyes each time I read it because I know He did it all for me.

As always I pray for you all, i pray that as we look into the more difficult areas of our beliefs that we would turn to our father with them, that He would reaffirm our faith in Him by giving us wisdom and understanding. I also pray that this post would glorify Him, In His precious name, Amen!

Hosanna ❤
